This past week has been a bit crazy…would you agree? Whew – whirlwind. Let’s do a quick rundown…
July 22nd, Sunday – we had our first Cumberland County Landfill Awareness Community Meeting and WOW! What a turn out! People from Cumberland, Goochland, Powhatan, and Henrico were present. The final count was 124 people that signed in and signed up to help. A member of the team presented a brief overview regarding topics such as Why Cumberland (and Powhatan) were targeted by County Waste? What the impacts will be around this mega landfill? How you can get involved as a concerned citizen? A question and answer session followed afterwards. And then neighbors stayed around, finished off the cookies, and chatted about their concerns and shared stories about how this proposed landfill has impacted their lives. Thank you!!!
July 25th, Wednesday – around noon we received word that The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors called a Special Meeting to occur on Thursday, August 2nd at 7:00 pm in which an agenda item was “…to consider the Green Ridge Host Community Agreement…”. (Personal note here – let’s hope they do indeed “consider” it deeply and with due diligence.) The BOS agreed to meet three specific contingencies prior to signing the Host Agreement as well as answer citizens questions/concerns that were presented during the last BOS meeting that occurred on July 10th. Public comment is not currently available/on the agenda, however, the agenda is subject to change. Show up and be prepared to speak and ask questions just in case! (Side note – at the last Board meeting, July 10th, the Host Agreement with County Waste was deferred to the next August 14th Board meeting.)
July 25th, Wednesday – around 3:00 pm we received word that the hearing for the Referendum and Injunction was moved to Monday, July 30 at 10:00 am. Apparently, shortly after the Board called their “Special Meeting” the Judge hearing the case was informed and, as a result, decided to move up the court case to this Monday July 31st. **Reminder this case is with the Judge, Bill Bruce, and a county representative. This is not our place or time to protest, demonstrate, and make noise. This is our time to show our composure, respect, and Courtroom decorum.**
Whew…so many thoughts I could interject and I will go with one…seems the County Board is indeed in a hurry to push this project through while the citizens are still trying to wrap their minds around the full impact. Let’s hope that thought is incorrect and the County Board is finally realizing and “considering” the full impact and repercussions of this project.
