WOW! We’ve been busy lately fighting the proposed mega landfill! A lot of good stuff has been happening and we wanted to share!
Before we jump in to cover the going-ons for the past few weeks, we want to make sure you are aware of some upcoming dates…
SEPTEMBER 4 – Questions Deadline – tomorrow is the deadline to submit any questions/comments to County Waste/Green Ridge by emailing Comments@GreenRidgeVA.com or calling 804.545.7112. (We ask that you cc us at NoMegaLandfill@LoveCentraVA.com if you email, for tracking purposes.)
SEPTEMBER 8 – Yard Sale – 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Southworth Power Equipment, 1273 Anderson Hwy, Cumberland, VA
SEPTEMBER 9 – Community Townhall Meeting – Meeting at 3:00 p.m. at the Cumberland County Community Center, 11 Davenport Rd, Cumberland, VA (intersection of Davenport Rd & Rt 45). All are welcome to attend to find out updated and valuable information concerning the landfill.
These past few weeks have been a bit hectic and productive! We’ve had many team meetings, door knocking efforts, researching, etc. However, the main focus from your responses seem to be around Fundraising Efforts (LLC) and the Burial Sites. So, here is a quick rundown of those for you. Enjoy!
August 21st – LoveCentralVA, LLC was born! People were asking us how they can fund the efforts. As a response, we created a LLC. If you want to contribute to the legal effort, please send checks made out to LoveCentralVA to the address below. A receipt will be mailed back for record keeping. Also, we will continue to accept funds at the Community Townhall Meetings and a GoFundMe Page is in the works. Also, contributions will not be tax deductible.

August 21st – we had a conference call with politicians regarding the proposed mega landfill, possible grave sites, and historical impacts. Very productive meeting!
August 22nd through August 25th – an emotional week for adjacent landowners as they received their “property protection packets” from LeClairRyan Legal Firm (Shumake) who represents County Waste/Green Ridge. This packet is the legal contract between County Waste and residents for compensation and silence in any opposition if signed before a deadline date.
August 22nd – Channel 6 news ran the news story about “the discovery of a possible burial ground and a historic school building near the site of a proposed landfill in rural Cumberland County has a citizens group sounding the alarm”.
August 28th – Burial Sites/Graves were confirmed! Delegate McQuinn, County Waste staff, land professionals, team members, and a few neighbors covered the property by foot and ATV’s. The burial sites were confirmed and even more were found!
August 28th – a few team members attended and presented at the Governor’s Advisory Board meeting. We met additional advocates and continue to get the word out!
August 28th – County Waste/Green Ridge held their required “public meeting” at The Cumberland County Elementary School. The meeting was one of the initial steps required in the DEQ permitting process, prior to County Waste submitting their Notice of Intent/Part A application to DEQ.
August 30th – Mr. Michael Paul Williams, with the Richmond Times Dispatch ran an exceptional article regarding the entire situation titled “A mega-landfill in Cumberland was approved without transparency. Now it’s a threat to black history.” A must read article in my opinion! Well written.
As a said, a busy week indeed. If you have any questions, feel free to email us at NoMegaLandfill@LoveCentralVA.com. Enjoy your week and we look forward to seeing you on Sunday!
