Good day to you! We wanted to reach out to say hello, give a quick year-end update, and wish you and yours Happy Holidays!
Next week will mark seven months since we all first heard about the proposed mega dump in Cumberland County. Residents were made aware of this dump project through certified letters, news articles, and meetings. As planned, the Board swiftly made the announcement, voted on the rezoning and conditional use permit, and signed the Host Agreement with County Waste for their GreenRidge Landfill all within two months – June 1st to August 2nd – leaving local residents in shock and very emotional to say the least.
Citizens in Cumberland, Powhatan, and other areas such as Goochland, Henrico, Northern Virginia, Ruther Glen, etc….made a unified cry of NO! We joined forces and became organized…raising funds, making people aware, knocking on doors, attending meetings, researching, seeking legal and advocacy groups for support, and so much more. As one neighbor from Powhatan stated, “I’m impressed with the folks in Cumberland…they aren’t people to be messed with!” and he’s correct!
Current Status
- Rezoning Appeal – on January 7th, three days before the official deadline, the lawyer for Mr. Sprouse “refiled” the rezoning appeal. Glad he submitted it early because, if you recall, it snowed quite a bit on January 9th cancelling our Community Townhall Meeting. Cumberland County has up to 21 days to respond and we expect the county to do so with a motion to dismiss. Then the court hearing date will be scheduled and will keep you informed of that date once set.
- County Waste’s Proposed Mega-Dump – since the Host Agreement was ratified on August 2nd, the next step for County Waste would be to file the Notice of Intent (NOI). They had planned to do so this month, December, and now they plan to do so late January. A point worthy of note for next month is that the Solid Waste Management Plan will be amended to remove Republic’s Landfill (the site off of 60) so County Waste’s Green Ridge Landfill can be added to the plan.
A huge THANK YOU to all involved in fighting this “Proposed Mega Multi-State Dump”! It is because of your involvement, your help, your prayers, your support, your donations that we have been as successful as we have been in 2018!! We’ve become a unified voice in opposition of this mega dump and we’ve accomplished so much to stop the dump thus far! It is not over and we will have a lot of work to do. However, it is with your support that we will continue to be successful in the New Year.
Merry Christmas!
We hope this Holiday Season brings you much peace and happiness!! We all fighting to protect our way of life and part of that life is treasured time with family and friends, especially during the holidays! We all deserve a wonderful time with our families during Christmas. Enjoy your Holiday Season and Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Happy New Year!
As we all ring in the New Year, we are looking forward to 2019! Mainly, we are prayerful and hopeful that 2019 will be the year the year that the proposed mega dump is stopped! Our water, way of life, air, historical value, family inheritance, etc. and the land itself, trees, waterways, wildlife, etc. will be saved and protected! 2019 is a year in which the Board of Supervisors in Cumberland is up for re-election. Hopefully, a new Board of Supervisors will have creative ideas of how to bring in beneficial revenue to our county and not environmentally destructive business.
See you Next Year…
Cumberland County Landfill Awareness will also be with our families and friends during the Holiday Season. We will not be communicating on social media (Facebook/Website/NoMegaLandfill Email)during Christmas and New Years unless something newsworthy or urgent presents itself. We will be preparing to continue the fight in 2019. See you next year!
We appreciate and value your involvement and support! Remember to mark your calendar for January 13th, 3:00 to 5:00, for our next Community Townhall Meeting!
