March 10th Community Townhall Recap
A great turn out during this month’s Community Townhall Meeting. Cumberland County Landfill Awareness is now Cumberland County Landfill ALERT! CCLAlert! Team members reviewed the status of the proposed mega landfill, reviewed local and non-profit partnerships forming, and enjoyed brunswick stew and fellowship following the meeting. A few points covered…
Cumberland County Landfill Awareness – a few changes…
Cumberland County Landfill Awareness is now Cumberland County Landfill ALERT! A CCLA team member suggested the name change after expressing that, as our goal is to stop this proposed mega-landfill, Alert is a better statement. The definition of alert – watchful and prompt to meet danger or emergency, an alert guard, quick to perceive and act! Obviously the team voted yes!
Address change – we are now officially Cumberland! Our mailing address is now PO Box 238 in Cumberland, VA 23040. (If you’ve mailed us at the previous PO Box, no worries as we will keep our eyes on that one until July.)
PayPal! We are now accepting donations in our efforts to stop the dump by PayPal! You suggested this and we agreed. Our PayPal link can be found on our main page under “Donate”.
During the meeting, the request for a Prayer Group Leader was made Throughout this effort, many people offered up help by their prayers and signed up to be prayer warriors. In response, we would send out prayer email requests to those warriors. Prayer will indeed be a key aspect to this effort and needed a dedicated person to “man the prayer wall”.
Sue C. stepped up to fill this role and we were so thrilled! Sue lives near the proposed mega landfill and has been actively involved in the effort and cause. She will be taking over those prayer emails and focusing on the prayer effort. Thank you Sue!
If you are interested in joining the prayer effort – please email us at NoMegaLandfill@LoveCentralVA.com and we will pass on your information.
Recap and Update…
This is what it’s all about – to stop this proposed multi-state mega landfill!! June last year, ten months ago, the announcement of the proposed mega landfill came out; the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors held their meetings, Host Agreement was signed on August 2nd. Shortly after the August 2nd meeting, adjoining and adjacent property owners receive the “property assurance packet”‘ with the deadline being February 28th.
Multiple citizens filed cases against the county – injunction and referendum by Mr. Bill Bruce who fought hard and unfortunately lost; Mr. Bruce Allen filed rezoning appeal who eventually withdrew; Mr. Hubbard Sprouse who filed rezoning appeal who eventually settled out of court – these cases began early June and ended early January.
Oddly enough, coincidence or not, around the same time (January) County Waste instituted a rate increase https://wset.com/news/local/i-think-we-made-a-mistake-county-waste-regrets-not-notifying-customers-of-rate-hike?fbclid=IwAR20sJ8OuL4n1FgnKeEsaoOMX9xtw7Cfc-ndPtgLU9ZgAjw0d7cf_y1aLp0. and began work to open a transfer station in Appomattox county
https://wset.com/news/local/county-waste-zoning-petition-draws-outrage-from-appomattox-co-community. January served to be an interesting turn of events and the proposed mega landfill seems to part of a larger plan which hinges on the proposed mega dump in Cumberland County. It has been rumored that County Waste speaks as if the proposed mega dump is already here, a done deal…which is not true. This is far from over!
Current activity around the proposed mega landfill site includes VDOT repair Brown Road washouts, Draper Arden surveying the land, testing bedrock and water levels, and gravel being laid due to the heavy rains.
The next step for County Waste is to submit the Notice of Intent. We will certainly “ALERT” you if and when that happens.
CCLA has been working diligently on many silver bullets which will be brought to light at the appropriate time. As a fellow successful landfill fighter shared with us…
“…I called us an octopus, with eight arms, one of them will eventually strangle the thing! As it turned out, rain, poor engineering and management by the applicant, and our tenacity were the keys but it all keeps the train moving in the right direction.”
Fundraising – Donuts, Donations, Craft Fair
Who can resist the “Hot Now!” sign? YUM!!! Our next delicious fund raising effort will be Krispy Kreme donuts! We will be selling Kristy Kreme donuts to be picked up during our May 4th event! Forms to order donuts will be posted on the website and provided during our next Community Townhall meeting.
Our May 4th event will be a Yard Sale and Craft Fair! We will have vendor spaces for rent and will be accepting yard sale donations. Keep your eyes open for more information.
