Happy Columbus Day – on this rainy day. Hopefully we will see sunshine later today.
Two Important Items
- BBQ to Go, Sunday, October 18, 2020 at the EZ Go at the corner of route 60 and 45 south in Cumberland, VA, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. This is our 3rd annual BBQ as we are in our third year of fighting the proposed mega landfill in Cumberland County. You have a choice of meats – beef brisket for $12 a plate, or pulled pork or Italian sausage with peppers and onions for $10 per plate. All meat choices comes with a roll and two other sides. Preorders are still being taken. See attached flyer
2. Request for Comments to the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE). In last week’s update we asked for your help in writing letters to the ACOE regarding the water permit application filed by Green Ridge. The letters can either be e-mailed to steven.a.vanderploeg@usace.army.mil or sent regular mail to Norfolk District, Corps of Engineers (ATTN: CENAO-WR-R) 9100 Arboretum Parkway, Suite 235, Richmond, VA 23235. There is a deadline of October 21, 2020. The letters should address why you believe this proposed mega landfill is not good for Cumberland County or Virginia. Do you really want the tranquility of the rural way of life to be a thing of the past? Do you want to give up your fresh air? What about protecting private wells, the only source of water for most residents? Do you want to give up going outside at night and seeing the stars and moon? Hunters and fishermen, do you want to give up being able to hunt and/or fish for healthy animals? Do you want to give up your hunting land or the streams you fish in? Just think about these items and then consider the residents of Cumberland County who are being asked to give up their homes, many of which have been family owned for generations.
There are two important statements to make in your letters to the ACOE; (1) you want the ACOE to require an Environmental Impact Study; and (2) you want a public meeting where you and others can let your voice be heard on this environment disaster!
Attached is the Public Notice from the ACOE and the post from last week which provided a summary of the ACOE Pubic Notice and some guidance on items to consider for enclosure in your letters.
Thank you for your support and help. Working together we will win this battle and there will be no mega landfill in Cumberland County!!!!
