General Assembly Bills
You know how the Virginia General Assembly operates with notifying at the last minute when bills are being heard by the different committees. This is true in 2021 – we just received notice that 3 of 4 of Senator Hashmi’s bills will be heard by the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources tomorrow, January 26, 2021.
The three bills are:
SB: 1186 Landfill siting; historic preservation.
SB: 1200 Waste disposal; local approval
SB: 1319 Waste control and recycling; permits.
Approval of these bills is important to our cause to stop the proposed mega landfill from becoming a reality in Cumberland County. Please either call or e-mail the members of this committee and let them hear you support these bills. We recommend your e-mail and/or phone call be short and to the point and stress these bills are important to our Commonwealth and the need to protect our environment.
Attached are several documents to make it easier on you or if you want more information, please e-mail us at NoMegaLandfill@LoveCentralVA.com.
Senator Hashmi’s SB 1318
This bill is referred to the Finance and Appropriations Committee. The bill and a list of the Committee members is below. We do not have a date for when this bill may be presented.
Other Bills Being Considered
SB: 1396 (administration bill) Sewage; Onsite Sewage Indemnification Fund; Wastewater
Infrastructure Policy Working Group; report. This bill will also be heard by the Ag Committee tomorrow. Consider approval of this bill.
SB: 1164 & HB 2173 – Advanced recycling; definition. Defines “advanced recycling” as a manufacturing process for the conversion of post-use polymers and recovered feedstocks into basic hydrocarbon raw materials and other materials. Consider recommending disapproval of these two bills. Cumberland County residents are currently faced with this issue in that Braven wants to put a plastic recycling plant within five miles of our schools. Such danger to our children and teachers if something goes wrong and the place catches on fire.
