Happy Spring – the birds are chirping, the grass is starting to turn green, and thoughts of activities for warmer weather are taking shape. It is also a reminder that we are fast approaching our fourth (4th) year of opposing the Green Ridge proposed mega landfill.
Green Ridge and their affiliates recently sent out at least four mailers to county residents. All of these mailers addressed what great $$$$$$ things they have already done or plan to do for Cumberland County. First, after three and going into the fourth year, Cumberland County is still holding it’s own – there are new homes going up and new businesses opening and the proposed landfill has not turned it’s first shovel of dirt.
Let’s take a few minutes and review the non-financial reasons we are against the proposed mega landfill:
Environmental Justice – areas selected are typically poorer and undeveloped. This is generally true but in the proposed Green Ridge landfill site there is wealth in the love of family and the rural way of life in the area – this is something $$$ cannot buy.
Private Wells – adjacent residents in such areas are dependent on private wells for water supply and have no reasonable options if their wells are contaminated. All residents in the proposed landfill site are dependent on well water. Contamination of the well water is a major factor to the local residents as well as neighboring residents. Please note private wells are not offered the same protection as the the public water systems have.
Environmental Justice –historical factors, such as family graves, war sites, cultural factors, and community values must be properly considered. This is very true in the proposed Green Ridge landfill site. These factors are all part of the Environmental Justice issues before government bodies today. AAMD and the Pinegrove School project is just one of the many factors to consider at the proposed landfill site. Take a moment to consider how you would feel if the location was the close to your home.
So you see, there are many things $$$$$ cannot buy – love, happiness, safe water, rural way of life, clean air, community values, and many more. One of the most important things is PROTECTION OF OUR ENVIRONMENT . It is the only one we have and it is our duty and responsibility to protect for use now and for future generations. $$$$$ cannot purchase us another one.
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!!! This is not a sprint but a marathon.
